I have a smaller, older home that lacks storage space. Tiny closets, tiny pantry under the stairs, etc. How can I keep my home from looking cluttered and what type of storage containers can I use that are both aesthetically nice and functional?
This is a problem with many older homes so the key is being organized. For the pantry I recommend you put frequently used ingredients like flour, cereal or nuts, in glass or acrylic flip lid jars. This looks really nice and makes it easy to find what you need. (Try stick on Chalk board labels) For other bulky items, separate into groups and stack attractively or place in coordinating colourful plastic or wire mesh baskets. There is an added benefit to having a well organized pantry- you can easily see what you have in stock for recipes or shopping lists.
Tiny closets mean that you need to keep out of season clothing in bins in the basement or hang in a spare room closet. Use the same kind of hangers for all of the clothes. This makes your closet look good and helps with maximizing space. I prefer wooden hangers for my coat closet and the flock covered variety for my bedroom closet. These are available at Winners or Homesense for a good price. You can try over the door hooks or shoe holders or give the hanging sweater shelves a try. Keeping the floor of your closets organized is very important. Arrange shoes and boots with the toes pointed out and use a basket or small clear bin for flats.
Please let me know if you have other specific rooms that need storage help.
